Ben Denham has been working with a custom laser etcher and drawing machine to produce new works on paper. Ben's approach is quite different to the way that computer controlled lasers have been used to burn, etch and cut materials. Rather than using the laser as a means to faithfully reproduce images or designs, Ben has been investigating what the laser can do as a mark making tool. This has involved exploring marks that could only be made with the use of a laser. These include recording audio wave forms in marks on paper, using the laser's fine line to produce intricate interference patterns and exploring how the laser registers the speed with which the marks are made.
